Rules & Regulations

Course knowledge

It is your responsibility to know the course and to familiarise yourself with the route and any possible hazard points before the event.

Neutralised start

The event begins with a neutralised phase through the city of Villach and is officially released by race management. Please follow the instructions of race management, ride with anticipation and pay attention to other participants.

Road traffic & StVO

Even on closed roads, public traffic, local resident traffic or emergency vehicles may occur at any time. The Austrian Road Traffic Act (StVO) therefore applies without exception. Always ride on the right-hand half of the road, do not cut corners and never cross the centre of the road, particularly on descents. Ride with anticipation and be ready to brake at all times.

Riding on or overtaking via pavements and cycle paths is prohibited and results in disqualification.

The course may only be ridden in the direction of travel of the event; turning back is prohibited.

Partial road closures

So-called partial road closures are used on individual sections of the course. In these areas, one half of the road is open to public traffic, while the other half is reserved exclusively for participants of the event. The two directions of travel are separated by traffic cones.

Riding on the half of the road open to public traffic is prohibited. Any breach constitutes a serious danger to all road users and results in disqualification.

Ride with particular anticipation in these sections, stay strictly in your lane and adjust your speed to the prevailing conditions.

Vorderberg level crossing (km 37)

There is a level crossing with barriers in Vorderberg (km 37). For the duration of the field’s passage, a rail replacement service will be in operation on this line. Should train traffic nevertheless occur for unforeseeable reasons, or should the barriers of the level crossing be closed, crossing the level crossing is prohibited. In this case, stop before the level crossing and follow the instructions of the marshals and the railway staff without exception.

Disregarding these instructions constitutes a serious safety breach and results in disqualification.

Road surface conditions

The course features varying road surfaces and changing road surface conditions. Adjust your riding to the conditions at all times. Particularly critical sections are signposted along the course and listed under “Hazard Points”.

Conduct in the event of accidents and medical problems

The safety of all participants is the top priority. Should an accident or a medical emergency occur, please observe the following points:

  • Seek support from the marshals, from spectators or from other participants.
  • In an emergency, call the emergency services (Austrian Red Cross) on 144 and state that the person involved is a participant of the Carinthia200. Give the location of the accident as precisely as possible.
  • Support other participants if they need help following an accident or a medical problem. This includes in particular:
    – administering first aid,
    – securing the scene of the accident and
    – activating the emergency chain without delay.
  • Should you end the event early, the rules under “Withdrawing from the event” apply.

Withdrawing from the event

Should you end the event early, please inform a marshal, the team at a feed zone or the emergency services immediately. An official withdrawal stating your race number is mandatory to ensure that no unnecessary search or rescue operation is initiated.

If you withdraw from the event early, you can return to the start and finish area in Villach in the broom wagon. Information on the current location of the broom wagon and on arranging a pick-up is available from the marshals or at the feed zones.

A prior official withdrawal with the organiser is also required if you make your own way back. Under no circumstances may the return journey be made against the direction of travel of the event.

Equipment & helmet requirement

To take part in the Carinthia200, the bicycle used must be in technically sound and roadworthy condition. You are responsible for checking your equipment accordingly before the start.

For safety reasons, the use of triathlon and time trial bikes or of road bikes with aerobars is prohibited.

Helmet use is mandatory without exception throughout the entire event. The helmet must comply with the applicable safety standards and must be worn properly fastened for the entire duration of the ride. Riding without a helmet results in disqualification.

Attach your race number clearly visible and in accordance with the organiser’s instructions to the bicycle or to your person. Altering, folding or covering the race number is prohibited.

For safety reasons, wearing headphones or other devices that impair the perception of ambient sound is prohibited throughout the entire event.

You are obliged to keep your bicycle under safe control at all times and may only use equipment that poses no danger to other participants. The organiser reserves the right to exclude participants with obviously defective or unsafe equipment from the start, or to prohibit them from continuing during the event.

In poor weather or exceptional conditions, the organiser recommends carrying weather-appropriate clothing as well as a spare inner tube or repair material so that minor defects can be fixed on your own.

Safety information

The event involves the risks and hazards typical of cycling events. Public traffic, local resident traffic, agricultural traffic or emergency vehicles may be encountered along the course at any time. The provisions of the StVO therefore apply without exception.

Weather, changing road surface conditions, unattended grazing livestock or other participants can also lead to dangerous situations. Your own safety is always the top priority. Ride with anticipation at all times and adjust your speed to the prevailing conditions.

The hazard points listed below cover the most important known safety-relevant locations along the course. Further hazards must be expected outside these areas as well.
